Journal History
Folia Medica Indonesiana is the medical journal of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. The journal's first volume, Berita Research Kedokteran Surabaja, was published in 1964. The first graduates were inaugurated in December 1955, for those who had been studying medicine at the previous medical education institution in Surabaya. The faculty departments were strengthened with the addition of new staff. In 1959, the first specialists who were completely educated at Universitas Airlangga finished their studies. Departments that previously lacked reliable experts now have skilled lecturers. Moreover, affiliation with the University of California, USA, was also established in the early 1960s. With this progress and the presence of new specialists, medical education at Universitas Airlangga entered a new stage, an era of research. As a result, a medical journal was required to publish the findings of various medical research studies. The first edition of the first volume, January–April 1964, marked the dawn of the medical-scientific writing tradition at this university. As a journal listed in some of the world's top libraries since its founding, its quality seemed satisfactory. At the end of the 1960s, the journal changed its name to Madjalah Kedokteran Surabaja, and then in the 1970s, the spelling was adjusted to become Majalah Kedokteran Surabaya. After three decades, the world has entered an era of globalization. Medical education in this country, like anywhere else, is confronted with the reality of global competition. To cope with this challenge, in the middle of 1997, the journal again changed its name to Folia Medica Indonesiana. The editorial and administrative management, as well as the physical appearance of the journal itself, were improved. The Folia Medica Indonesiana, written entirely in English, has been published quarterly until now.
